Ivory Northern Blue-Tongued Skink

The Northern Blue-Tongued Skink (Tiliqua scincoides intermedia) is a fascinating reptile known for its striking appearance and unique behavior. Found primarily in northern and eastern Australia, these skinks are part of the broader blue-tongued skink family.



Size: Typically measure between 18 to 24 inches long.

Coloration: Exhibits a range of colors, including shades of brown, tan, or gray. Their most distinguishing feature is their vibrant blue tongue, which they display as a defense mechanism to deter predators.

Body Structure: Known for their robust, elongated bodies and relatively short legs, giving them a distinctive and somewhat chunky appearance.

Habitat and Distribution


Natural Habitat: Prefers wooded areas, grasslands, and open forests. They thrive in environments with plenty of cover, such as leaf litter and underbrush.

Geographical Range: Found across northern and eastern Australia, extending into southern New Guinea. They are adaptable and can be seen in both rainforest and arid regions.

Behavior and Diet


Diet: Primarily herbivorous, their diet consists of leaves, fruits, and flowers. However, they may also consume insects and small invertebrates.

Behavior: Known for being relatively docile. They often bask in the sun during the day and can occasionally be seen foraging for food. When threatened, they may hiss and display their blue tongue to scare off predators.


Northern Blue-Tongued Skinks are viviparous, giving live birth rather than laying eggs.

Females can give birth to anywhere from 5 to 15 offspring after a gestation period of about 3 months.


Conservation Status

While Northern Blue-Tongued Skinks are currently not considered endangered, habitat destruction and the pet trade can threaten their populations. Conservation efforts focus on habitat preservation and educating the public about their ecological importance.
